For us, this car-free sanctuary in the Aegean has long been a place of pilgrimage - a haven where time slows, the light turns golden, and the simple act of living becomes an art form.

Greece has always been one of the greatest muses behind Abahna. On our most recent visit, we found ourselves once again captivated by Hydra's rich heritage. Beyond its whitewashed alleyways, blue shutters and cascading bougainvillea lies a remarkable history. For centuries, the island was at the heart of the Mediterranean sea sponge trade, with generations of skilled divers descending into the crystal-clear waters of the Aegean to harvest nature's most luxurious bathing companion.

These beautifully soft, natural sea sponges became synonymous with the ritual of bathing itself - transforming an everyday necessity into a moment of indulgence and wellbeing. Their story is one of craftsmanship, patience and respect for the natural world; values that continue to inspire us today.

Hydra's sponge-diving legacy was immortalised in 1957 when Sophia Loren starred in Boy on a Dolphin. Filmed on the island's sun-drenched shores, the film introduced audiences around the world to the beauty, romance and danger of this extraordinary way of life. Walking past the grand captains' houses that still line the harbour, it's easy to imagine that golden era, when the sea yielded its treasures and bathing rituals were elevated into something truly special.

As the sun slipped beneath the horizon, painting the Aegean in shades of amber and rose, we were reminded why places like Hydra continue to inspire everything we create. They remind us to slow down, to embrace ritual over routine, and to find beauty in life's quiet moments.
